about

This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite hymns. It was written in 1907 by a woman named Adelaide A. Pollard. The story of its composition from Cyberhymnal.org goes like this:
Pollard believed the Lord wanted her in Africa as a missionary, but she was unable to raise funds to go. In an uncertain state of mind, she attended a prayer meeting, where she heard an elderly woman pray, “It’s all right, Lord. It doesn’t matter what You bring into our lives, just have Your own way with us.” At home that night, much encouraged, she wrote this hymn.

There's not much more I can say about this song except that I daily try to pray these powerful lyrics.

This version is a straight forward-ish country waltz with somewhat tricky timing. Every time a new drummer sits down to play this tune with us it takes a few run throughs to get the pacing. In order to learn the subtleties of the timing and melody I remember playing video games for a full hour with John Fogerty's version on repeat blasting in my headphones. The highlight of this recording has to be Nicole DeGreg's stellar violin solo.
