about

We don't really take requests, but this is perhaps the most requested song in the Gentle Wolves catalog. This is one of the first songs I 'unearthed' a couple of years ago. Basically, I found the 107 year old lyrics and then set them to new music.

I find the lyrics to be amazing, even if they are a bit confusing the first few times you hear them. Once you figure out where they're going, however, the song begins to make a lot of sense. The first for example:

"Let Thy blood in mercy poured,
Let Thy gracious body broken,
Be to me, O gracious Lord,
Of Thy boundless love the token."

By the time you get to the chorus, however, its very simple.

"You did give yourself for me, now I give myself to Thee."

This version came together nicely. We play this song often on Sundays so we had a lot of time to solidify our parts before going into the studio.
I especially like Mitch and Molly's BGVs which support my always-slightly-out-of-tune vocals so perfectly. Also this is my favorite guitar solo from Mitch so far. He's a talented guy.

Due to some frustrating recording circumstances the breakdown chorus near the end turned out pretty interesting. Kyle's swirling piano and the back-masked guitars led my mom, upon hearing a rough mix, to say "Well that's unusual."
And while we're talking about Kyle, probably the best musician in our band, he recorded the piano parts for Vol. IV three times because the piano in the sanctuary has trouble staying in tune!
All of these folks are so dedicated not only to the band, but to the Servant Church community.
For them I am so thankful.
