about

As far as I can tell this song was written by Mahalia Jackson in the 1940s. It measures 1 part lament and 1 part redemption, mixed in with a terrible and disquieting batter.
Much as with In the Sweet By and By, the theology of this song doesn't tell the whole story. 'Pie in the sky when I die' is not a helpful mantra for God's people to live by. Even though it is true that 'Soon we'll be done with the troubles of the world,' it doesn't mean we can give up on it just yet. God has work for us to do. We must still proclaim that God reigns in even the darkest and most messed up places we've got.

Further, though we love the thought of seeing our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers on God's celestial shore, there's no indication that we'll know them or relate to them in the life to come. However, one thing is for sure, we are promised that we will go meet our savior and maker!

Production wise, this is the biggest undertaking the Gentle Wolves have ever tried. It features lots of instrumentation and lots of noise. Especially awesome is Kevin Gibbs' crazy clarinet and sax work. They help give it the dirty New Orleans feel that I hoped to achieve for this recording. When we play this song in worship it is always preceded by O God We Waited So Long.
