about

This is our adaptation of the final movement of A Silver Mt. Zion's epic piece ironically titled "God Bless Our Dead Marines" (from their 2005 album Horses in the Sky).
A Silver Mt. Zion, who are closely related to Montreal's Godspeed You! Black Emperor, are certainly not Christians. They might be surprised to find a group of Jesus people in Texas singing their words to their god. We see it as half dream and half lament sung in a repetitively contemplative Taize-esque routine. I find this to be a powerful song on Sunday, especially when immediately followed by a more redemptive selection.

Many remember this being sung during Seth's time at Mosaic, but it was me, Richard, who introduced this to both Mosaic and Servant Church's liturgical palate.

There's a lot about this song that's different from the rest on Vol. IV and Set II. Instead of being tight and polished like many other tracks, it is sloppy, almost unkempt. This is Mark's camel-hair wearing, locust eating John the Baptist. I was sure not to erase too many mistakes and to let the blemishes remain part of the lament; off key singing and all.
Because of its sheer loudness and these imperfections, more than one person has called this the most distinct song in our repertoire. To some it might seem out of place on this record, or even for the Gentle Wolves. To that all I can say is that it makes sense to us.

This is probably the choir's high point for these EPs coming out in 2014. Like in ASMZ's original, there are 3 rounds of vocals towards the end. Kind of a Row Row Row Your Boat tripping on acid. Also, this is our first appearance from violinist Nicole DeGreg who is currently traipsing all over the planet doing God's healing work.
